Deinosuchus priscus (Leidy, 1856); senior synonym of D. rugosus (Emmons, 1858)
Deinosuchus, meaning “terrible crocodile,” was believed to have been an estuarine (river) crocodile, and their fossil remains are sometimes found in transgressive lag deposits. As the sea level rose, terrestrial and river deposits were ripped up and redeposited in the marine formations. Deinosuchus was an enormous crocodile, averaging 25 to 30′ long, and weighing up to 20,000 lbs!
